The «Alpine Classic Pullman Express»

is experienced as a luxurious seduction and alpine adventure simultaneously. We travel elegantly on rails in historic carriages adorned with the enchanting Art Deco style of the early 20th century. The extra train of the “Glacier Pullman Express” is composed of this historical rolling stock.

It’s not just the comfortable armchairs, bay windows, delicate window tables, or the precious teakwood that symbolize the elegance of the carriages. It is rather the masterpiece, the harmony of all details along with the special ambiance that defines the unique experience. Thus, the four Pullman carriages, each with 32 seats, create a cohesive atmosphere for refined travel, primarily on the rail network of RhB. Specifically for journeys with the “Glacier Pullman Express”, the carriages also operate on the route of the Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn from Disentis to Zermatt and back.

The “Glacier Pullman Express” consists of two original Pullman carriages from 1931 from the ‘Cie. Int. des Wagons-Lits et Grands Express Européens.’ The valuable wood inlays are the work of the famous French cabinetmaker René Prou. Additionally, there is a piano bar car from 1928 and a luggage car from 1931. For onboard lunch, two Gourmino dining cars from 1929 and 1930 also join.

All carriages are lovingly restored and comply with today’s safety regulations. The train is authentically pulled by historical locomotives, including the world-famous “Crocodile” on a section of the Rhaetian Railway.

Sunday, 22 to Monday, 23 September 2024

At approximately 08:15, departure from Zermatt with the «Glacier Pullman-Express – Private de Luxe Train». We take our seats in the luxurious compartment from the 1930s and enjoy the fascinating journey with constantly changing views.

Eggishorn and Aletsch Region
We take a cable car ride to the Eggishorn (2866 m), a unique vantage point in the Aletsch region. The mighty Aletsch Glacier, the centerpiece of the UNESCO World Heritage Aletsch, lies at our feet. On Fiescheralp (2212 m), we indulge in an Apéro riche.

Pure Steam Train Romance on the Furka Mountain Route
The Furka Mountain Route was used by trains of the «Glacier Express» until October 1981. After the opening of the Furka Base Tunnel, the track was decommissioned, and the facilities were handed over to the Furka Mountain Railway (DFB). In thousands of hours of volunteer work, the track, steam locomotives, and cars were restored.

Our romantic adventure starts in Oberwald (1366 m). The over 100-year-old steam locomotive climbs along the rushing waters of the Rotten on the cogwheel track uphill to the highest station, Furka (2163 m). We cross the cumulative point of over 2100 m above sea level on our journey. The steam adventure ends in Realp (1546 m), and we continue our journey in the «Glacier Pullman-Express» to Andermatt.

Overnight in Andermatt
Andermatt was first mentioned in a document in 1203. Finds from early history indicate that people were already present in the Ursern Valley around 4000 BC and during Roman times around 300 BC. Arrival at the foot of the Gotthard at approximately 5:00 PM. Evening at leisure and overnight stay.

After breakfast, the locomotive of the Matterhorn-Gotthard Railway continues to pull our special train over the 2033 m high Oberalp Pass to Disentis.

Disentis Monastery
The Benedictine monastery of Disentis was founded around the year 720. For centuries, the Benedictine abbey has run a school, since 1880 as a gymnasium and boarding school. A monk shows us parts of the monastery and tells us about daily life.

Lunch on board
Between Disentis and Chur, the Pullman Express Brigade serves a fine lunch in the Gourmino dining car.

Ruinaulta – the spectacular Rhine Gorge
Dive into the pleasure – along the Rhine. It is still young, narrow, but powerful all the same. So powerful that it has carved out the spectacular Swiss Grand Canyon from the stone over centuries of work.

Chur, the capital of the canton of Graubünden
The oldest city in Switzerland enchants amidst an imposing mountain landscape with winding streets and historic buildings. Celts, Romans, Ostrogoths, Franks, they all once ruled Chur as a gateway to important trade routes. What remains is a history of over 5000 years and, from more recent times, impressive buildings.

Continuation to St. Moritz
We travel the Albula route from Thusis to St. Moritz. The Albula and Bernina lines of the RhB have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Arrival in St. Moritz at around 7:00 pm.
